For Family Members of the Substance Abuser / Addict

Those of us living with husbands, wives, sons and daughters who are struggling with substance abuse often have a tendency to try and protect our loved ones (and ourselves) by keeping their “problem” secret. Confronting the addict one on one or as part of an intervention group and getting him or her into a rehab facility is critical.
 
Living with a family member who has a substance abuse problem is incredibly anxiety-provoking and stressful. Until you realize that you can’t fix this problem and decide to allow God to guide them through the process of dealing with the consequences of their poor choices, the destructive roller coaster lifestyle of the addict can negatively affect both your mental and physical health. Finding a Bible-based support group for yourself where you can share what you are going through with other people who are living the same thing is vital. Praying with the group members for each other’s children or spouses is not only edifying, but petitioning God to take control and trusting in Him to provide solutions and the right people to help the addict is also empowering.
