According to the 2023 United States National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) 48.5 million (16.7%) Americans, ages 12 and older battled a substance use disorder in the past year. A 280% increase in overdose deaths from opioid abuse in the last decade.
NSDUH is directed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
